The quaint city of Coronado hosts more than 24,000 people in Southern California’s San Diego County. In English, Coronado means “the crowned one” and has thus been nicknamed “The Crown City.” Today, Coronado is quite a popular tourist destination for both local and non-San Diegans alike. The small island city has become a resort-town just off the coast of downtown San Diego and prides itself on its small-town atmosphere and uptown social environment. As one of the most expensive places to live in California, the area has received significant attention from celebrities and other wealthy Americans. The city was featured in the 1960s television series called “Coronado 9.”

Coronado shares its island with the North Island Naval Air Station and although small, also hosts two golf courses on the tiny island. The Sea n Air Golf Course and Coronado Golf Course are both based on the island. Highway 75 transits through the island, connecting downtown San Diego with the island as well as with the US Naval Amphibious Base Coronado that encircles the San Diego Bay. The naval base is the famous training center for the navy’s elite SEALs and is part of the much larger but seprated Naval Base Coronado. A limited ferry service also operates to different points in San Diego, mostly to tote tourists back and forth. The very unique Ferry Landing Marketplace is located across the small stretch of water from the city center of San Diego and besides having a host of nice places to eat and shop for trinkets and souvenirs also has a great view of the greater San Diego area.

Tourism is the main driver of the Coronado economy. Three large and famous resorts, Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Island Marriott, and Loews Coronado Bay Resort, headline a list of popular hotels and inns that are usually booked to capacity year-round. The downtown district of Coronado features many shops, boutiques, restaurants, and theaters. The annual Coronado Flower Show and the annual Coronado Island Sports Fiesta are both popular festivals that bring even more people to the island. The sports event is held in July and includes a competitive swim race, dives, rough-water swims, and other events.
