South County real Etstae Info

The southern suburbs and the southern detached part of the city of San Diego that extends to the border with Mexico comprise South County, better known as South Bay. The region includes the South San Diego neighborhoods, those suburban communities south of the City of San Diego, as well as National City, Chula Vista, East Lake, Imperial Beach, Coronado, and Bonita. Some of the smaller communities that are included in the South County area are Egger Highlands, Nestor, Ocean Crest, Otay Mesa, Palm City, San Ysidro, and Tijuana River Valley.

South County extends entirely south to the border with Mexico and is bounded by Imperial Beach to the west, Chula Vista in the north, and the Donovan Correctional Facility that is just east of the region. The recently completed South Bay Expressway, a toll road, has improved the connectivity of South County to the rest of San Diego County and California. Most residents use San Diego’s International Airport for travel although the Brown Field Municipal Airport, located in Otay Mesa, is an attractive alternative for general aviation.

Some of the major landmarks that can be found throughout the area’s communities include Chula Vista Bayfront, Southwestern College, Chula Vista Soak City, Onstage Playhouse, Coors Amphitheatre, South Bay Power Plant, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, Mile of Cars, Surfhenge, a U.S. Olympic Training Center, Border Field State Park, and the San Ysidro Border Crossing. The border crossing between the United States and Mexico is one of the largest entry points between the two countries.

South San Diego’s high schools are operated as part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. Montgomery High School, San Ysidro High School, Southwest High School, and Mar Vista High School provide exceptional coverage for the area’s students. Middle schools that mimic the names of their high school counterparts are also operated as part of the district. Thirteen elementary schools provide a convenient selection of campuses. Seven are operated as part of the South Bay Unified School District and the other six are managed by the San Ysidro School District.
