The beachfront neighborhood of Ocean Beach is an active member of the San Diego community in Southern California. Located along the coast, Ocean Beach is about seven miles from the center of downtown San Diego and is located just south of Mission Beach. Mission Bay, just north of Ocean Beach, is a beautiful sight to see and is the geographical and ecological focus of the area. The salt-water bay and lagoon includes Mission Bay Park, the largest man-made aquatic park in the country. On most weekends, it’s not uncommon to see many of Ocean Beach’s water sport enthusiasts take part in wakeboarding, jet skiing, sailing, and camping in the bay area.

The I-8 interstate terminates at Ocean Beach, making for convenient commutes to the rest of San Diego County as well as the San Diego International Airport at Lindbergh Field. The main thoroughfare in the neighborhood is Newport Avenue, home to several antique stores, restaurants, local boutiques, tattoo shops, coffee houses, bars, surf stores, and small hotels. The main road also hosts Ocean Beach’s three schools: Ocean Beach Elementary, Sacred Heart Academy, and Warren-Walker. For students in the public education system in grades six and up, they much make a short drive to neighboring towns.

In addition to Ocean Beach Park and Ocean Beach Athletic Area, Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is one of the area’s best attractions. The pier is the longest concrete pier on the West coast, protruding into the water almost 2,000 feet. The community also hosts a number of local events that draw the neighborhood together as well as invite visitors to join in the festivities. In early March, the Ocean Beach Kite Festival kicks off and showcases a number of the area’s latest artistic masterpieces. The Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off is held every June and welcomes competitors from across the nation to compete in a competition of the best chili. The street fair features more than just chili and includes a number of different food booths, arts and crafts, movies, and other entertainment. A Jazz festival is the headliner in September and the December Ocean Beach Christmas Parade is a popular conclusion to a fun-filled year.
