Old Town San Diego is considered the birthplace of California. San Diego is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement in California and has been a progressive leader in the Southern Californian region since the 18th century. Bay Park, located just north of Old Town, is a charming community that is located along the shores of Mission Bay. Both located at the intersection of the I-5 and I-8 interstates, Old Town and Bay Park residents have convenient access to the main thoroughfares that can whisk them into downtown San Diego within a matter of minutes.
Between Old Town and Bay Park is the University of San Diego. The institution offers more than sixty bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs and consists of six schools. The five professional schools are in business administration, leadership and education sciences, law, nursing and health science, and peace studies. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest and includes the most programs. Created in 1949, the private university hosts almost 5,000 students. Many of the over seven hundred faculty members live in Old Town and Bay Park because of the area’s close proximity to the university’s Alcala Park campus.
Today, Old Town and Bay Park are pleasant mixes of commercial districts and residential neighborhoods. Additionally, both areas are known for their celebration of the past. Several shopping plazas in Old Town are exclusively saved for stores that are dedicated to this living heritage. Old Town Market, Bazaar Del Mundo, and State Historic Park are the most frequented. Other historical attractions nearby include Serra Museum, Heritage Park Victorian Village, Seeley Stable Museum, El Campo Santo Cemetery, San Diego Sheriff’s Museum, Presidio Park, Cas de Pedrorena, Mormon Battalion Memorial, and the Alvarado House.
Old Town is located just north of the San Diego International Airport at Lindbergh Field. While many prospective residents would be worried about noise, Old Town and Bay Park are both removed from the airport’s flight patterns and are further insulated from obnoxious noise worries because of the airport’s strict hours of operation and noise abatement procedures. Many rankings have places Lindbergh Field as one of the quietest in the nation. The airport offers service on a variety of airlines to dozens of destinations around the world.
