The suburban community of Mira Mesa is located several miles of the city of San Diego and is a thriving residential and commercial community. While it is a suburb of San Diego, Mira Mesa is also an independent entity. Many residents choose to work in Mira Mesa and the surrounding area instead of commuting into the city on a daily basis. Miramar Marine Corps Air Station forms Mira Mesa’s southern and eastern boundaries. The installation is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 46, and Combat Logistics Company 11. The 23,116-acre base is comprised of two portions: the eastern section is undeveloped and used for live training while the western portion serves as the primary base and airfield.

Since Mira Mesa’s establishment in the 1950s, Mira Mesa has been largely influenced by the local military community and has been an influential residential area to support the families of the base. However, Mira Mesa has also attracted thousands of residents to its community because of its ideal location between two large interstates and its close proximity to downtown San Diego. In fact, Mira Mesa has grown into the largest community in San Diego.

There are eight community parks, teen and senior centers, an ice arena, aquatic complex, and a host of other facilities to serve the area’s recreational needs. Winterwood Community Park, Mesa Verde Park, Maddox Park, Mea Viking Park, Sandburg Park, Hourglass Field Community Park, and Westview Park are just some of the parks in Mira Mesa. The community also features an exceptional range of shopping, centered around Mira Mesa Marketcenter and Mira Mesa Mall.

Miramar Reservoir is just across the I-15 interstate from Mira Mesa and is an exceptional recreational area, popular with casual swimmers, sun bathers, and even a few avid water sport fans.
