The incorporated city of Encinitas is actually comprised of smaller communities, including Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Leucadia, and Olivenhain. Home to just over 58,000 residents combined, the city is conveniently located just 25 miles north of San Diego and about 95 miles, or a 75-minute drive, south of downtown Los Angeles. While Encinitas is an enjoyable city in itself, residents also enjoy the surrounding areas. Carlsbad, home to Legoland California and the Carlsbad Raceway, is just north of Encinitas and is a popular weekend trip destination. Solana Beach, just to the south of the city, is a nice escape for those residents looking for a day at the beach.

Shopping can be done at the Encinitas Ranch Town Center or the Encinitas Marketplace, both of which offer excellent grocery stores as well as other restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. The largest single industry in Encinitas is surprisingly the growing of ornamental flowers, like the Christmas favorite poinsettias. A number of annual events are designed to bring together the entire Encinitas community and are usually highly anticipated by the entire area. The Fall Festval is held every November and was originally created to celebrate the Poinsettias grown in the area. The Wavecrest Woodie Meet is held each year in September at Moonlight State Beach and is the largest rally of wooden vehicles in the world.

Other local attractions that are interesting for both visitors and residents include the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, Quail Botanical Gardens, La Paloma Theater, and the large number of surf spots available to avid surfers, the most famous one being Swamis. Golfing is a popular after-hours activity and is quite accessible for most residents. Encinitas Ranch Golf Course and the Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe are the most popular hotspots for Encinitas’ golfers.

The educational system in Encinitas is quite efficient and includes schools both run by the city itself as well as those operated by individual neighborhoods and communities. The Cardiff Elementary School District, Mira Costa College District, and San Dieguito Union High School District join the Encinitas Union School District in serving the area’s youth. Five high schools, two middle schools, and nine elementary schools provide some of the highest-rated educations in San Diego County.
