Translated from Spanish to English as “holy land,” the San Diegan community of Tierrasanta is also referred to as “The Island in the Hills” by city locals. Originally part of the Mission San Diego de Alcala ranch in the 1700s and 1800s, the area was briefly used by the United States Marine Corps before it being transferred for residential use in 1971. Developed out of a portion of the Mission Trails Regional Park, Tierrasanta was one of the first master-planned communities in San Diego. As a thriving upscale neighborhood consisting of single family homes, apartments, condominiums, shopping centers, and parks, Tierrasanta has quickly come one of a few top-ranked communities in San Diego. The tree-line streets and secluded “small-town” atmosphere has made for one of the best urban neighborhoods in the city.
To match its top-notch identity, Tierrasanta’s educational system has also been ranked quite well and received numerous awards. The local Junipero Serra High School has been one of the best performers on the Academic Performance Index used by the California Education Department. Jean Farb and Gaspar de Portola Middle Schools are equally well-qualified. Tierra Santa’s youth are also provided convenient elementary educations at a choice of eight different campuses.
The United States Marine Corps Base at Miramar forms Tierrasanta’s northern boundary while Montgomery Field, a general aviation airfield, is located across the I-15 interstate and just west of Tierrasanta. Mission Trails Regional Park forms the eastern boundary of Tierrasanta while the Admiral Baker Golf Course is just south of the community. The regional park not only includes several grassy fields but also a range of hiking trails, campgrounds, and other resources.
Villa Montserate Park, Villa Norte Park, Tierrasanta Community Park are just some of Tierrasanta’s most popular recreational areas. Community activities focus on the Tierrasanta Recreation Center, which includes lighted sports fields, a large swimming pool, tennis courts, a gymnasium, and meeting rooms. Numerous green belts with walking paths run through the canyons of Tierrasanta. The Tierrasante Town Center is the community’s favorite shopping center as it offers the best variety and choice. However, two other small malls also serve the residents of the neighborhood.
