The middle-class neighborhood of San Carlos is located in the central area of San Diego County and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Del Cerro, Lake Murray, Tierrasanta, Navajo, Allied Gardens, La Mesa, and Mission Trails. Delicately placed alongside the Mission Trails Regional Park and Lake Murray, San Carlos feels separated from the rest of the area although it remains in a convenient and centrally located area just a few minutes from downtown San Diego.

Lake Murray is a popular recreational area for many reasons. The lake and the surrounding Lake Murray Park provide a number of picnic areas, limited overnight camping opportunities, challenging jogging trails, and scenic walks that wind their way through the beautiful area. The much larger and more expansive Mission Trails Regional Park adds to the already green community and is quite a relaxing area. Mission Trails Golf Course is near the heart of San Carlos and is typically busy throughout the year. A number of other clubs and courses are located a little farther away.

Patrick Henry High School serves San Carlos as well as the neighboring communities of Allied Gardens and Del Cerro. As a part of the San Diego City Schools District, Patrick Henry High is a member of the second largest district in the state and offers a comprehensive four-year curriculum for San Carlos’ students in grades nine through twelve. The campus is shared with San Diego Community College’s Navajo campus that is co-located on the site. Grossmont College is located on San Carlos’ northern boundary and is a convenient option for those students who wish to stay close to home.

Shopping is easy to come by in San Carlos. The Fletcher Hills Town & Country Shopping Center can be found along Route 125 in the northeast corner of San Carlos while Lake Murray Village Shopping Center is located on the southeastern part of the neighborhood. The largest center is Grossmont Center, just across the Fletcher Parkway from the majority of the San Carlos community. Gillespe Field isn’t too far away. The facility not only serves as a convenient airfield for general aviators but also hosts the San Diego Air and Space Museum’s restoration facility. The museum is one of the most extensive in the nation and includes many vintage and modern aircraft, including a replica of the Sprit of St. Louis and a F-102A Delta Dagger.
